Dr. Manroop Bal

Dr. Manroop Bal brings together two complementary perspectives in mental health care: the insight of a psychologist and the medical expertise of a psychiatrist. Before completing her psychiatry residency and fellowship in Addiction Medicine from University of Alberta, she worked as a registered psychologist in Calgary. This experience continues to shape her compassionate, thoughtful, and patient-centred approach to care.

As a psychiatrist and addiction medicine physician, Dr. Bal supports individuals experiencing substance use concerns alongside complex mental health challenges. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Psychiatry and has the Diplomate designation (DRCPSC) in Addiction Medicine. Drawing on her training in CBT, DBT, and EMDR, she integrates psychotherapeutic understanding with medical care.

Her commitment to excellence across diverse areas of psychiatry has earned her several honours, including the Dr. RH Mewburn Memorial Prize in Forensic Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Psychiatry along with the Dr. Sidney Spaner Memorial Award in Psychotherapeutic Psychiatry.

Dr. Bal is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary. She is passionate about medical education, developing future physicians and public conversations about mental health and addiction. She speaks English, Punjabi, and Hindi.

Dr. Bal believes that recovery involves more than reducing symptoms; it is about helping people regain stability, strengthen their sense of agency, and build meaningful, sustainable lives.
