Dr. Krystle Samways

Dr. Krystle Samways is a psychiatrist and addiction medicine physician committed to providing care for individuals experiencing psychiatric and substance use disorders. She completed her medical degree, Psychiatry Residency, and Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the University of Alberta. She holds designations as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Psychiatry and Diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (DRCPSC) in Addiction Medicine.
Throughout her training, Dr. Samways has received multiple awards recognizing excellence in psychiatry, addiction medicine, and medical education, including the 2023 R.H. Mewburn Memorial Prize in General Adult Psychiatry and the 2026 Alberta Medical Association Award in Addiction Medicine.

She is a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta, where she is committed to mentoring and educating the next generation of physicians and has been recognized with the 2025 Medical Student Teaching Award.

Dr. Samways takes a holistic approach to care, integrating psychotherapy, medication management, and evidence-based addiction and psychiatric medicine to support meaningful and sustainable recovery. She has training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based psychotherapy, with a focus on promoting self-awareness, resilience, and long-term wellbeing. She believes that effective psychiatric and addiction treatment should be individualized to each person’s goals, circumstances, and strengths.
