Dr. Kendra Martel is a Psychiatrist and Addiction Medicine Physician dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to individuals experiencing mental health and substance use concerns. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences and her Medical Degree at the University of Calgary, followed by Psychiatry Residency and fellowship training in Addiction Medicine at the University of Alberta. She holds the designation of Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Psychiatry and Diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (DRCPSC) in Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Martel has a particular clinical interest in concurrent disorders and the complex relationship between mental health and substance use. Her approach to care is trauma-informed, collaborative, and recovery-oriented, recognizing the importance of understanding each person’s unique experiences, strengths, and goals. She works collaboratively with patients to develop individualized treatment plans that integrate medical care with psychological and social approaches to support meaningful and sustainable recovery.

During her psychiatry training, Dr. Martel was recognized with the Dr. R.H. Mewburn Memorial Prize in Forensic Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Psychiatry. She also served as Chief Resident for two years, where she was involved in supporting residents, advocating for trainee needs, and contributing to the development of the residency program.

Dr. Martel is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine. She is committed to medical education and supporting the development of future physicians. She has training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), group therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, and incorporates these therapeutic perspectives into her clinical practice.
